Dupe vs. Counterfeit: How to Shop Dupes the Right Way

What a dupe is, how it differs from a counterfeit, and seven checks to make before you buy any dupe.

"Dupe" is short for duplicate, but a good dupe isn't a copy. It's an original product from another brand that shares a similar look, feel or function with a more expensive item. Here's how to shop dupes with confidence.

Dupe vs. counterfeit

Dupe the Look only lists dupes. If you ever spot something that looks like a counterfeit, please let us know and we'll remove it.

Seven checks before you buy any dupe

  1. Read the materials. Fabric, leather grade and fill tell you more than photos do.
  2. Read the reviews, especially the photos. Customer photos show what the product really looks like.
  3. Check the dimensions. Scale is often where cheaper versions differ.
  4. Know the return policy before you buy, especially for furniture and large items.
  5. Buy from retailers you recognise or with a solid track record.
  6. Compare the total price. Shipping and assembly fees can shrink your savings.
  7. Ask whether you'll love it. The best dupe is one you'd buy even if the original didn't exist.
